Latin Music Loves Neon Fashion

Fashion trends come and go, and lately, there’s been a rise in neon colours, especially in the Latin music industry.
Many artists, including Maluma, Becky G and Lali, are using social media to flaunt their neon-coloured gear. J Balvin even strutted the 2019 Billboard Latin Music Awards red carpet wearing an all-neon suit. To better understand the fad, Mexican fashion designer and celebrity stylist Angie Escamilla weighs in, giving all the credit to the ’80s.
“Artists are using it in their concerts and music videos because it really grabs your attention,” says Escamilla to Billboard. “The color is very vibrant and many high-end designers, such as Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton, are focused on this trend that’s considered the ’80s comeback.”
One of the most popular colours of the moment is neon green or yellow, which was recently worn by Daddy Yankee, Anuel AA, Karol G and Ozuna during the filming of their upcoming video. “We’ve seen the neon trend before, but not as big as it is now, especially for men, who are daring to use it,” Escamilla says, adding that the neon green or yellow is the most popular option because it’s unisex.
Working 18 years in the fashion industry as a stylist for artists such as Paulina Rubio, Marco Antonio Solis, Farruko, Gloria Trevi and Alejandra Guzman, to name a few, Escamilla believes this trend is here for the long run.
“I think it’s the trend of the spring and the summer, but it really depends on where you live. In Miami, for example, people might continue using it because summer is almost eternal,” she says, assuring that even if it fades out, neon will return in 2020.
